Kips blog and Game Recap.

It is reported today that the Seattle Sounders are practicing this afternoon at 2pm down at PGE Park.  Give them hell.

Tomorrow, the epic journey of the Portland Timbers-Seattle Sounders rivalry continues.  Like 2009, they will meet again in the United States Open Cup.  Seattle edged Portland 2-1 in the nationally watched match that included a sellout crowd, and a stellar atmosphere.

The teams met again this past March.  This time in the Community Sheild match that was arguably the largest preseason crowd for two U.S. domestic clubs.

And now, the two rivals will square off in the United States Open Cup 2010.

This is a match you will NOT want to miss

Seattle Sounders @ Portland Timbers – June 30th, Wednesday at 7:30pm, PGE Park

from oregonlive.com

With a big game in two days, the Portland Timbers didn’t get caught overlooking their opponent Sunday.

The Timbers put Wednesday’s game against the arch-rival Seattle Sounders on the back burner and remained focused on the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies long enough to win 1-0 in front of 8,892 at PGE Park.

The Timbers (5-5-4, 19 points) face Major League Soccer’s Sounders in a U.S. Open Cup game Wednesday. But the Timbers wanted to win an important league game against the Rowdies and maintain the momentum from winning two consecutive games. Continue Reading »

A familiar site occured Sunday at PGE Park.  Our beloved Timbers dropped a result at the last second, allowing Carolina to score, and equalize.  Despite playing well, and dominating for much of the game, another defensive breakdown lead to a stoppage goal for the guests from Cary, North Carolina. PORTLAND, Ore. – Midfielder Rodrigo Lopez provided a key assist and then scored the game-winning goal as the Portland Timbers defeated Argentina side Boca Juniors 3-2 in an international exhibition match Saturday at PGE Park before 14,106.

Down by a goal, Lopez made an immediate impact upon entering the match as a sub in the second half. He assisted the Timbers’ equalizing goal by defender Stephen Keel in the 74th minute, which leveled the score at 2-2. On a free kick in second-half stoppage time, Lopez then found the go-ahead goal to lift the Timbers to victory. Continue Reading »

An utmost congratulations from all of us.  Liam Michael Hardwicke was born at 12:33pm on May 26, 2010, measuring at 19 3/4 inches long, and weighing in at 8 lbs, 8 ounces!  The proud father, Christopher Hardwicke (General Zod), has been a loyal member of the Timbers Army for years.  We are glad everything went smooth, and we happily welcome little Liam to the world!

Liam, may you be blessed from this day forward, and let the Timbers force flow within.

LOWS:
- The obvious, Portland Timbers losing to shit Baltimore again, this time 2-1 in Maryland.
- What’s up with this shitty weather?  The local soccer fields were in not good condition to play for an afternoon scrum.
- Just thinking about the Timbers four game winless streak…
- Hearing news of the St. Louis soccer financial situation.
- Division II soccer in 2011? We’ll see…

HIGHS:
- Watching Champions League: didn’t care about the result, awesome game between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.
- Discussing the World Cup Madness with folks, hoping to fundraise a good chunk for the Timbers Army tifo fund.
- Eating Swirl Frozen Yogurt in SE Portland with a fellow Rowdie.  While there, many people noticed my Timbers jersey, and commented either on the game played against Baltimore that day, or MLS 2011.
- Hearing news that the Portland Timbers MLS crest will be revealed on June 12th, during halftime of the USA-England game.
- Timbers Army season ticket package is complete!  Great work to the folks for getting this done.  Stay tuned for further updates…
- Finally getting a date set for the Timbers Army tifo fundraising event, Rowdies Cup Beer Pong Tournament.  After several attempts, we finally found a date that works for the several reasons at hand.  Date to be revealed soon…
- Seattle 0:1 San Jose, watching Freddie Ljungberg complain the entire game, priceless.

I don’t need to explain, watch the video.

There’s No Pity in the Rose City.

PORTLAND, Ore. – A first-half goal by midfielder Tony Donatelli led the defending-champion Montreal Impact to a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers before 6,573 at PGE Park on Wednesday. Portland was dealt its second loss in the last three games.

The Timbers conceded another first-half goal that would prove to be the game-winner for the visiting side. Donatelli struck in the 31st minute and the Impact (3-1-2, 11pts) endured 17 shots by the Timbers to pull out the road win and improve its unbeaten streak to five games. Continue Reading »

After a weekend of two disappointing home games, the Timbers prepare for the Montreal Impact on Wednesday at PGE Park.  The Thursday loss to Baltimore, and the last-minute equalizing goal for St. Louis, sent the Timbers faithful home frustrated.  Being early in the season, the Timbers can afford such home results, however as the season progresses, our boys cannot allow such giveaways.  Let’s see how Gavin and the rest of the crew respond on Wednesday to an always tough Montreal side.

The Portland Timbers sustained a 1-nil lead throughout the second portion of the second half after Keita’s goal.   It looked as though the Timbers would take home three points, and leave St. Louis with another point-less trip to the Rose City.  However in stoppage time, St. Louis would equalize after a lucky bounce, and the opposition defender, Mike Ambersley, would find the Portland net.

Portland would outshoot St. Louis 14 to 3 in the contest, as once again the Timbers would Continue Reading »

The Portland boys were stunned Thursday night, as the opposing side Crystal Palace Baltimore grabbed the game’s only goal in the 29th minute.  The Timbers would start the game slow, but than would outshoot Baltimore 16-5 in the second half.  After a few dings off the post, and several close calls, it was apparent it wasn’t Portland’s night: 1-nil final score. The Timbers will battle Baltimore on a beautiful Thirsty Thursday night at PGE Park.  Baltimore sits in dead last with 1 point.  While no opponent should be overlooked, given Portland’s current offensive front, Baltimore would have to place extremely well to get a result.  Continue below to view Yev’s TimberCast.

It’s been a great five seasons in the heart of the action, but sometimes decisions have to be made for the greater good.  That greater good is the Timbers Army, and the future it may hold.  The Rowdies will no longer be occupying the front rows of Section 107, starting this Thursday.  Sure, a few members may stray behind for a game or two, but for the most part, the growth for the Rowdies will be moving somewhere else.

Lookie what has been revealed this morning…

Timber Joey Found!

After the Portland Timbers Facebook page gave several hints as to where Joey will be on Saturday, 12pm to 1, the location will be Skidmore Fountain.

from the Portland Timbers Facebook page:

Timber Joey will be out at Skidmore Fountain (SW 1st and Ankeny) TODAY during the Saturday Market from 12-1 pm! Fans will have the opportunity to take photos and collect a limited edition Portland MLS 2011 patch! You must be wearing Timbers gear to receive a patch!

I remember when Portland scored six against Atlanta in 2005, but the Silverbacks could only get one back.

However, to actually have the score read 6:6 after fulltime, bizarre.

In the SPL Wednesday night, down 6-2, Motherwall comes back and scores four straight goals.  An absolute amazing game, not just of the high tally, but being down that many in the second half — and coming away with a draw.  Wonder if our Portland Timbers will see any games like that this year ;) ?  Video highlights below. After 4 weeks of play in the USSF Division 2 league, nothing unexpected has come about in the NASL/USL based league.  The only real surprise so far in this early season is the 2nd year Austin Aztex.  For the most part, this squad sat most of the 2009 in the cellar of the table, however 2010 is looking entirely different.  The no-brainers currently at hand are Continue Reading »

Timbers owner Merritt Paulson challenges the Timbers’ Facebook community to recruit friends, family and coworkers to join the club’s Facebook page.  We need your help to increase fan support as we move to MLS next year.  If we reach 15,418 fans (the same number of fans that attended the sell-out on opening night) by the Timbers match vs. Vancouver on July 3, Merritt will accompany Timber Joey during the match and assist him in some of his game-day duties. Specifically, Merritt will chainsaw at least one wood slice if the Timbers score, he will present the log slice(s) to the team after the match and he will lead at least one chant, all while dressed like Timber Joey!  We can meet this challenge if Timbers Facebook fans recruit just one member each (although more are encouraged).  Let’s show the league and MLS which team has the best fans in soccer!

The Portland Timber battle Northwest rival Vancouver tonight at PGE Park!

How much time will Keita get?

How much will the Timbers win by tonight?

…And how much rain will not fall, making Yev look like an incompetent weatherman ;)

Stay tuned tonight for these answers…

This week, the Timbers battle Northwest rival Vancouver.  Last year, the Whitecaps would knock the playoff hopes of Portland, as the boys from the Rose City look for revenge this time.

A miss worth noting

Over the weekend, Kei Kamara of the Kansas City Wizards missed a point-blank shot.  Well, the ball went into the goal, except his hand hit it in — sort of cheating.  The embarrassing moment however is hardly the “worse miss” ever witnessed, or is it?  Check out these videos: Continue Reading »

Demand will soon be rising like the morning sky, have you secured your Portland MLS tickets for 2011?

Remember, we’re talking about Soccer City USA!  Visit the website for more information!

The Timbers drew the Impact on Sunday 1 to 1, as a late PK would seal the draw for Montreal.

Ryan Pore scored halfway through the 2nd half, as the game became rather chippy.  A ticky tack call would send the home team to the spot, and the game became equalized late.

The Timbers still remain undefeated in Montreal in the last 6 matches.  Portland takes on rival Vancouver this Thursday, game set for 7pm.

The Portland Timbers take on the Montreal Impact on Sunday afternoon.  Game is set for 11:00 am Pacific Time, with radio and internet stream available.

The Timbers have done extremely well historically in Montreal.  The Timbers are 4-1-1 there lifetime with five shutouts.

Interesting facts so far this year; the USL is 6-0 versus the NASL.

The Timbers belong to the USL, whilst Montreal resides in the NASL.

Portland 3:0 St. Louis

Well, Yev predicted another great forecast. 3 to 0 for the good guys, as the Timbers remain undefeated.

Game started out with a goal within the first minute of the game.  Roughly 20 seconds in, Ryan Pore finds net to put the Timbers up 1-nil, and from there, the Portland Boys would cruise. Continue Reading »

I’ve definitely seen fans this uncoordinated at Timbers games before, however never to the point where they have challenges with a piece of clothing.  A hilarious video of a wise gentleman trying to put his flip-flops on at Coachella 2010 last week.  The Palm Springs area music festival is a yearly famous attraction. Point of the story, if you’re going to drink as much as this dude, don’t wear flip-flops.

Okay, whether you can’t stand anything that isn’t a Pacific Northwest microbrew, you have to admit Thirsty Thursday’s are the best invention since the cheese slicer. We all love our Blazers.  But it would suck, if both the Timbers home opener, and the Blazers game 1 appeared on the same calendar date.  Suck.  Originally it was looking that way, even an early rumour report came out validating this nightmare.  However, a new report just came in from NBA HQ in NYC: says game 1 will be played Sunday.  Great news for both fan bases.  Timbers focus: Saturday.  Blazers focus: Sunday.

Week 3 was interesting to say the least.

Games were no doubt entertaining, but goalkeepers were making error after error.  I guess that is what makes the game fun, right?  Watch the highlights of the New York, Philadelphia, and Houston games, and you’ll know what I am talking about. Highlights can be watched at the incredibly reliable www.MLSsoccer.com.

Week 3 scores
Chivas 2:0 New York
Philadelphia 3:2 D.C.
New England 4:1 Toronto
Kansas City 1:0 Colorado
Houston 0:2 Los Angeles
Dallas 2:2 Columbus
Chicago 1:2 San Jose
Salt Lake 2:2 Seattle

While MLS’s 2010 campaign is still quite young, this game still has to be one of my personal favorites of all time.  Definitely worth posting, Beckham’s first MLS start, and over 66,000 in attendance.

The Cascadian clubs Vancouver and Portland are predicted to finish at the top of the USSF Division II this season.  No surprise there.  Trailing close behind is Montreal as they are also expected to make the jump to MLS, most likely in 2012, however nothing has been confirmed.

SoccerAmerica Predictions:
1. Vancouver Whitecaps (NASL)
2. Portland Timbers (USL)
3. Montreal Impact (NASL)
4. Puerto Rico Islanders (USL)
5. Carolina RailHawks (NASL)
6. Rochester Rhinos (USL)
7. Miami FC (NASL)
8. Tampa Bay Rowdies (USL)
9. Austin Aztex (USL)
10. NSC Minnesota Stars (USL)
11. AC St. Louis (NASL)
12. Crystal Palace Baltimore (NASL)

I always enjoy history of the Pacific Northwest. Interesting tidbit I found on what coulda-shoulda-whoulda been the State of Lincoln. The sad part is, even if it did happen, I would hardly know the difference. That is just how out of touch I think we are from our “east” side.

As you can tell, not much news in the soccer world or Portland today ;)

Well slowly but surely, the MLS website is not sucking complete balls.  It was only about 2 weeks ago we saw the new layout — decently impressive, however working with IT in the past, one knows how something looks is complete independent about how something works. As expected, kinks and bugs were reported, and several features of the website failed to work.  Fans of course showed signs of outrage over this change, and before MLS could catch a breath after recently agreeing to a new CBA, they had to now fix a league website that was a total piece of crap.  As Seattle and Philadelphia kicked off in First Kick 2010 Continue Reading »

Do companies do this because they actually feel it’s a smart marketing ploy, and they want us to laugh along with them?  Or do they do it for our amusement alone, as we laugh hysterically at them when passing by?  Maybe both, but I doubt it.  Maybe I can figure this one out…

We’ve all seen them, even waved or pointed, but either way it grabs your attention.  I am talking about the sidewalk advertisers you see at busy corners throughout town.  Yes they’ve been around for a few years now, but it only seems to be getting worse.  The ones that stick out in my mind the most are Continue Reading »

Sure we’re known as Soccer City USA.  But does the rest of MLS truly know that yet?

The MLS Cup was held in Seattle last year, and will be held in Toronto this year.  Coincidence?  You tell me, but I think so.  It’s evident MLS is “pimping” its latest products of quality to improve the image of the league.  Understandable, and a no brainer, it falls in line with any basic business strategy.  Toronto started out 2008 with a bang: incredible fans, and unbelievable passion.  No one had seen such a sight in this part of the world.  Also, because of its rarity, no one was really sure how long it was going to last.  It’s the ole business basics 101 question, how long does the shoe shine?  Continue Reading »
